‘Garbage’ Remote job adverts really annoy remote job seekers.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the modern workplace, traditional office setups are no longer the only option for earning a living. Thanks to advancements in technology and shifting work cultures, various non-office-based working types have emerged, catering to individuals seeking flexibility and work-life balance.

However, there is a frustration brewing :  😡 Garbage Remote Jobs.

You know what we mean…. When you see a Job that says ‘Remote’ but they then tell you that you needed to go to the office twice a month. Well, Sorry that’s not really Remote – It’s Hybrid.

Many job seekers have reported concerns about advertised roles that do this nonsense, and only find out at interview that they are expected in London twice a week. It’s a waste of everyones time and it’s totally unnecessary, if it’s Hybrid – just say it’s Hybrid.

So, if you are about to try to hire someone, here’s 3 of the worker types we work with (among many) and how we ‘see’ them. When we post a role, we make it clear who should apply and how the dynamics will work, there’s no need for trickery. So, we work with:

Digital Nomads 🌍
Digital nomads are a growing tribe of individuals who leverage technology to lead a nomadic lifestyle while working remotely. Armed with laptops and reliable internet connections, digital nomads have the freedom to work from any location worldwide. Their preference for new experiences, exploration, and cultural immersion drives them to embrace a nomadic lifestyle. Some may choose to work from co-working spaces or coffee shops, while others opt for more unconventional settings like beaches or mountains.

We have many colleagues who move all the time, they let us know where they are, but really as long as they are happy, we don’t mind where they call home.

Remote Workers 🏠
Unlike digital nomads, remote workers often have a permanent residence and choose not to embrace the nomadic lifestyle. They still enjoy the flexibility of working from home or any other location outside the office. Remote workers may freelancers, contractors, or consultants. The key distinction lies in their preference for a consistent work setting rather than frequently changing locations.

We have a lot of these types of people who work with us, they don’t usually move around but like us for the remote nature of the work and the fact they are still in control, and thats cool with us.

Hybrid Workers 🏢🏠
Hybrid workers are the product of a blend between traditional office work and remote work. These individuals have the option to split their workweek between the office and remote locations. Companies embracing hybrid work models often have flexible policies allowing employees to choose where they work based on their needs and preferences. This setup allows for a balance between face-to-face collaboration and the autonomy of remote work.

We literally have 2 of these in Cyprus, these are full-time people who can go to our lovely office, or work at home in their Pajamas. They like the office, but don’t love the office and they have a lot of flexibility.

Distinction

The moment you bring an office in to play, it’s no longer ‘Remote’ for us – That’s Hybrid. Then, when the location is set (by us or by the individual) we see it as ‘Remote Work’, and finally if we have no idea where you are going from one week to the next, and we don’t need to know, for us – That’s a Digital Nomad.

Conclusions

✅ If you are hiring, just think about what you want from the hire and be clear and open from the start. The advert is what attracted someone to the role and if it’s not true it’s just not going to work out causing wasted time, money and effort for everyone.

✅ Remember, each of these categories – Digital Nomads, Remote Workers, and Hybrid Workers – have different needs and expectations. Therefore, defining the job in line with these categories will help target the right candidates.

✅ Not only will this lead to a better hiring process, but it will also build a better work culture that respects and values its employees’ time and needs. By clearly distinguishing the nature of the work (remote, hybrid, or nomadic), you can attract the right talent and avoid any miscommunication or misunderstanding down the line.

So, no more Garbage, please. 🗑️
